TechMamas HP Magic Giveaway - 6K in Tech To A Mom or Dad Hero VOTING STARTS DEC. 12

When I found out that I was part of the 50 bloggers participating in the HP Magic Giveaway, I did not sleep too well for the next few nights. I had the chance to give away (US) $6,000 in amazing hardware, accessories and software that could really make a difference in someone's life (or a group ). I had so many ideas, so many people I want to share some magic with. Schools(teachers), charities, families and especially moms (parents) that all give so much on a daily basis. CONTEST DETAILS (COMMENTS ARE OPEN, contest has started!!!! Please go to the bottom of the post and comment your "mom hero" story/links):

  • You can nominate yourself or someone else.
  • I prefer that (like many of us) that you can't afford to buy all of this amazing equipment on your own.

You can be a mom that works for an underprivileged afterschool program that wants to share some of the package with the program and some at her home to develop curriculum. You can be a mom  or dad that runs a charity that needs technology to take it to the next level or is trying to get their career back on track - and looking to help others as well.
  • To enter, just comment on this post with links to as many different types of media  you want to use to tell you story, or just a text comment.
  • Please be "for real",  there are people that really need this!
  • I request (not require) that you "share" the magic by giving part of your package away to the school or charity that is part of your "story"

Comments will be OPENED December 7 and CLOSE December 11.  The top 20 "mom heroes" will be chosen from all the comments using Random.org (since all moms are heroes - how could I possibly choose!).
STEP 2: READERS CHOOSE THE WINNER: The winner will be then be chosen via a poll displayed at the top of this post (December 12).  POLLS OPEN on December 12 and CLOSE December 13. This is a good time to get everyone you know to vote!!! Again, voting will start Dec. 12 and close December 13 (9pm pst 12pm est).

2. This entire prize package will be awarded to person with the most votes on the poll.  The more information you provide about how you plan to make a difference using your technology as one of the tools, the better chance for voters to understand your story. The more media you use to tell your story, the more powerful it will be. Use video, podcast, blog posts or updates on your website. But if you don't have a blog - tell your storty on the comments. A powerful story will come out no matter what media you use.

3. The winner is requested (not required) to share part of their prize with the school or charity that is part of their "story" (share the "magic").

4. All prize items will be shipped from HP to the winner. The winner must have an real U.S. address, no p.o. boxes. Entrants who have won this prize at one of the other 49 blogger’s websites involved in the HP give away will be disqualified.

5. I will be posting the name of the winner - so please provide only public information that can be shared online. You don't need to mention any location or school names if you don't want to ("local school" is just fine).  Don't put email addresses on the comment section, enter it into "email" section when you fill out the comment (that is not displayed). I will need that email address to contact the winner.  The contest may be shared with media so the winner will need to comply with that request.

6. I am joining in my fellow contest bloggers and asking that the winner of my prize submit information about how the package was used via a blog, video or website. If the winner does not have a website, they can submit the written story to me and I will post on TechMamas.com. Either way, I will do a follow-up post with the information. The follow-up information will be requested 4 -6 weeks after the prize is delivered. Mid progress is fine!

7. The winner will be announced on December 14th.

Any questions? Please email techmamas(at)gmail(dot)com

I have been a single Mom for last 13 yrs and I have not been able to get a new computer..this one I use belongs to my son, since he got it with his disability money 5 yrs ago and it is needing new Ram, etc. it crashes sometimes and I really hope and pray we could win this so all 3 of us would enjoy a new computer and all the accessories with it..also i am unable to work due to my muscle disease, M.D. muscles do not work well. this winning this sweepstakes would be a huge Blessing to my 2 kids and I..
Thank you so much for putting this HP sweeps for Moms like myself, struggling through life. and no added income to relieve the stress of providing a decent computer for my 2 kids.
bye bye

I can afford it so it's not for me.

I'd like it given to a girl from the Godparents group who is going to College next fall.

One school bus driver in Los Angeles started taking kids on trips that I can't begin to explain. Please take a look at the website and know that the most at risk kids that Los Angeles' inner city has, have been helped.

Lives are changed. I've love to send a girl to college ready to meet the technological challenges that will be thrown her way.

I think it's great that u want to give this away to another mom! ;-)

First I would share part of this package with the women's shelter that I used to live in. They help battered women as well as addicts. This was the only shelter in this county for the longest time, but now there are 3. Finally people are "seeing" the need.

The shelter does a lot of good for women who need it. I personally lived there for about a year, and it was the best thing in my life that I could do, at that stage in my life.

Things with me aren't as bad as they were before I went to live there, but they are tight, especially in this economy.

I love the computer & all tech-related things and would love to be able to supplement my income by blogging, reviews, and customer service that they do. I would love to be able to work at home.

I have a pc but the power supply got wet this past February. Since then I use the the computer at work and my Sidekicke cell phone because all social networking is blocked where I work. I have just started networking more, with LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, and various blogs. Soon to be Facebook also.

Winning this package would enable me to give back to any agency that gave me so much, as well as provide my children and I to have computer use again.

Thanks for the giveaway!

Following u on twitter now!

I have been teaching for almost eighteen years and I have been blessed each day that I have been in the classroom.

About twenty years ago I was beginning a new life. I'd been a battered woman who was abandoned shortly after I gave birth to my youngest son. I had quit college to marry my husband so I realized that I needed to go back to college if I expected to get off Welfare.

I received a degree in Education and I've been teaching Business classes since I've graduated. When you teach Business classes you are often teaching the kids that many teachers don't want to teach. What I mean is that many teachers want to teach college prep classes. I on the other hand see the kids that sit in my class could have easily been me or one of my brothers and sisters. These kids are the same kind of kids I hung with in high school and I knew they deserved a chance to achieve their dream.

I am currently teaching in a school that has a diverse population. Over half of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. I work hard to help my students find the path to achieving their dreams. We use the internet in class to complete college applications and search for scholarships.

If I won this package it would allow me do give a couple of students the notebook they will need when they go off to college. I could really use one of the notebooks as well as the printer in my classroom.

The economy has really caused schools to tighten their belts and we can't always afford the technology that our students need.

I want to thank you so much for suggesting that people might think about donating computers to schools. Even if I don't win, I hope these computers wind up in the hands of kids who might otherwise be left behind.

I am a mom, but I do not want to nominate myself. I am nominating my friend because it is not easy raising children as a single parent. However, my friend and co-worker choose to do so when she adopted a sister and brother nine years ago.

When my friend decided to adopt a child nine years ago, I warned her of all the pitfalls. When she excitedly related that the agency had found her two children, a sister and younger brother, I exhaled all the dangers; raising one child as a single parent would be tough but two . . . . . .

However, I assured her that should she move forward, she would not be alone. Adopt we did and it has been a blessing from day one. Young Miss is a vibrant and helpful eleven-year-old who doesn’t like school, but tolerates it well. Little man has shown a great maturity at the age of ten. He is a straight “A” student and a football star!

I have kept my promise and helped support these children both financially and emotionally. I do a plethora of “Titi” duties. However, this Mom doesn’t really need my help. She is a wonderful tireless champion for her children.

Unfortunately, my friend was injured on the job, and after two unsuccessful surgeries, it looks like she will have to accept a medical retirement next year. She is into photography and hopes to turn her talent into a new career, so a new computer and the HP Photosmart C6380 Wireless AIO (printer) would have to go to her. Further the children would get a computer to help them advance in their school career! Of course the Kung Fu Panda DVD would also have to find its way under their Christmas Tree also. I get giddy just thinking of the joy I could bestow on my favorite family.

I would like to nominate my parents because they are my heroes are both 64, have never owned a computer and aren't in a financial position to purchase one. I believe the HP TouchSmart IQ816 PC with Windows would be the perfect introductory computer for a novice and I think the touch screen input would help to alleviate their technophobia. I know that if they won this amazing prize they would give most of the items away to those in need making many people very happy this Christmas.

I'm 36 yrs. old father of 2 kids a boy and a girl ages 5 and 7 and just recently lost my job do to the slow economy, I'm trying to find a new job but it's hard to find one because all the places I applied to is either not hiring or there letting go employees, thankfully I have great support from friends and family that help me out through this tough time, I can't even think about Christmas right now but the kids want this and they what that and it's hard enough to tell them that daddy can't afford that now, My 7 year old wants a computer of her own to help her with school work and my sun wants a Nintendo Wii but those things are to expensive for me to buy right now especially without a job, I'm barely making rent every month but without my mom and dad and friends that helped me alot with food, rent, gas and cloths for the kids I know me and my wife wouldn't never made it, if it wasn't for the support, The Hp Magic will bring joyous to are family it will be saving me seeing a big disappointment on my kids face they didn't see what they wish for under the tree, but what can I do I think failed as father because I couldn't provide for my family which is so depended on me but I'm trying my hardest to make this Christmas a good one and with TECHMAMAS and HP help i can put a smile on my kids face when they wake up that christmas morning thanks you for having this contest and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year and good luck to everyone who's entering this contest.

If I was so lucky to win this prize I would share it like this. I would keep the desktop and printer for myself because I have a Dell that I purchased used and it is not working right and no one can fix it. I have 3 kids at home and 2 would use it for school and it wouldn't freeze up on them. The printer would be mostly for book reports and school stuff. One laptop I would give to my husbands nephew whose family like mine is in hard times and he is 16 and could use it. The other laptop would go to my aunt who also can not afford a computer but would like one to keep in touch with her son. The other stuff I would probably donate to my kids schools. They can always use stuff. Thanks for the chance to win this. brewerchickey78(at)yahoo.com

I am a mom of 3 and a 5th grade teacher at Parkview Elementary School in Eagle-Mountain Saginaw ISD in Northeast Fort Worth Texas. I have heard from 3 out of the 12 parents that I have already conferenced with before Thanksgiving break that they are in such financial crisis that their children will do without anything this year.
If I were to be the lucky recipient of your prize package all of the technology and equipment would be used to benefit the students that I teach. I would supplement the classroom that currently teach to make sure that I am able to effectively teach the students and make them responsible citizens, as they are the ones who will be taking care of you and me in our aging years. I would continue to use the technology in my classroom to benefit these 88 students and the future 5th graders that I teach. After making sure that the classroom was effective, I would love to make sure that the families that I have heard from that are struggling to get by have a Christmas for their children. Regardless of whether I win this or not, I will still do the latter; however, this generous prize package would allow me to reach even more families in need. I hope that you will consider me and my students when you make your selection for your winner!

hi i would really like to keep the small mini laptop and the rest i would donate away.
first I would donate a laptop to a school that cant afford a computer at all, they still use those old typewriter and not the electronic one to type out letters. Besides I would like to donate all of the remaining items to Do Bosco Boarding school, these children let alone computers they don't have proper food to eat, they most survive on lentils and rice, that mostly their daily food, chicken or meat is bought for them maybe on occasions, also as far their education is concerned they our taught by the people of take care of them, they don't go to schools, i wanted to give them computers so that they could learn and educate themselves, and i'm sure it would make their Christmas very special and more make them very happy. thanx

I'm not a parent and my family and already have a working computer so it's not for myself.

Instead I would like to nominate my godparents to receive the gift. They have two children who are still school.

Having grown up and study with the aid of a computer and the internet myself, I think that a computer will really help with their education. Therefore I think having a HP TouchSmart in their home will be the most suitable.

My godparents have taken great care of me when I was young and given me love like I was one of theirs. I am really blessed and wish to return all the love they have given me.

Assuming that I get chosen, I'll nominate that the runner-ups each get a share of the rest of the gifts, if that arrangement is possible. I do not think that even the needy requires the entire package for themselves (what would they do with 3 PCs?) Moreover, there are so many people who need or will benefit from this generous giftaway equally, I believe that is the best way to spread the love and spirit of goodwill.

If however that arrangement is not possible, I will give the rest of the gadgets to my high school's satellite campus in Beijing (http://hci.edu.sg/ViewFeature.asp?FID=4).

Did you know that animals being left behind in homes where people had foreclosures or are walking away from their homes is skyrocketing? There is an epidemic of animals that are simply being left to fend for themselves wondering why their owners have left them....this is where the SPCA comes in. Our countywide SPCA clinic is underfunded and commits themselves to placing animals, they are a no-kill shelter and desperately need additional funds and equipment to do what they are so passionate about. With record numbers of animals being picked up and saved-they need help.

If I were to win this package, I would keep one laptop to help grow my web design business, where I also donate 5% of every project to our SPCA as well as the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary which you can visit at http://www.bestfriends.org/. Here is a link to our SPCA where you can see some of the great animals that need my help! http://www.monmouthcountyspca.org/default.htm

The remaining items from the package would go directly to our local shelter where they can either use the equipment in their own offices, or raffle them off to earn additional funds to care for the animals-either way this would be a great help to their strapped resources!

Thank you for this amazing opportunity to do something great for my community. I always wish I could give more financially to them, but that has just not been possible, but this would be a great way for me to help them which I so badly want to do!

I am not a parent myself but I would like to nominate my own parents because they lack the skills to enter this giveaway themselves. My father has retired years ago due to heart and back problems. He has now a pacemaker and a artificial heart valve and almost all of his pension goes to meds.

My mother on the other hand as works as a clerk in a bank. Yet somehow my parents have managed to raise two sons( me and my brother) and they have always helped us financially as we both study at university. They really are my heroes who have showed that it is possible to get a good life even with little resources if you know what to do.

The prize would help them to learn more about computers, especially my dad who can't even turn a computer on. I am sure they would give what they don't need to those who have a use for them.

I am a dad. I cannot afford to buy this great tech package or subsystems individually but here is what my plans are. One would go to my local church to upgrade their system (www.sthelenaschapel.org). I attend and volunteer there as well. One system would go to my aunt in VA who runs hollyhelp.org. She doesnot have a pc and her website is run by a supporter. I would keep a PC to replace my aging 8 year old desktop and I would give my son the netbook to help make school more fun (and fund stuff also). Regarding the other three pc's, I do not know which would go to who, although I would keep the laptop. I use my pc for the following ways now. I am a volunteer firefighter for my town and also the company clerk. I manage the meetings and documents this way. I also volunteer my time for church and my sons school as a member of the school council. I use my PC for a lot of research. My wife is on the school PTO and I sometimes help her with research, agan on my pc. (my wife has a laptop for her work she uses). Good luck to everyone. Happy Holidays.

I'm a single mom of two girls and the desktop and printer would be a great for me especially because I'm taking a course in medical transcription in order to help myself become more self sufficient.

If I were to win I'd give on computer to my best friend who's also a single mom and she's living solely off student loans, and one to my younger brother to help him with school and also because he was just diagnosed with HIV and he's shown interest in blogging his journey, and a laptop would be able to help me with that.

Everything else I'd donate to a Wilmington, NC domestic violence shelter called The Open Gate. They helped me this past January, even sending an advocate to appear in court for me in a hearing in which my husband was trying to take my daughters from me. I think they could really use everything.

I teach writing and technology to sixth graders in Massachusetts. I always had this idea of hosting a digital storytelling night for parents and children, so that they could learn more about each other while exploring new technologies. If I were to win, I would use the equipment for hosting such a night (building on a project that my wife has done with mother-son writing nights) for families and then use the equipment in my classroom for my students. I believe that access to technology is a huge issue, particularly for single-parent families, and our schools have an obligation to provide opportunities not only to the students, but also to the parents, to use and understand the possibilities of technology.
Thank you for considering my proposal.

I am posting on behalf of my mother Yvonne Da Costa:

It’s quite overwhelming when you think about what HP, Microsoft and ‘Techmamas' are giving away. HP has exemplified something here, the gift of giving and the magic it entails? If I were to win all this hardware I would share some of the gifts with St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church, Cross Keys which has been a significant contributor to this small community in South Manchester. Serving not only the spiritual aspects of its congregation but providing a foundation for families and the youth with a Basic School constructed in 2005. A Youth Club program was started in 1997 and has been consistent ever since by providing opportunities for local Youth through social activities such as sports, summer schooling and trips. A non-profit organization such as my church does not have the resources to invest in state of the art technology, so giving them some of the package would be a significant contribution I believe in helping out the church technology wise. Other parts of the package would be shared with my two older brothers. This collection of devices is screaming, show the good in you, so why not make the 'smart' choice of sharing the magic too? Thanks!

My family has had a really tough year. First, my mother lost her home to fire, about a year ago. Insurance rebuilt the home, but she lost everything. I would share with her, because she has not been able to replace the computer she lost. Second, I have been unemployed since January. My wife and kids have encouraged and supported me in going back to school full time.
And that leads me to this, My daughter is a freshman at college with a partial scholarship for photography and design. This would really help her in her degree. with our financial situation we have not been able to support her the way we would like.
We also belong to a home school organization that we could be help from this prize.
Thank you

I am not a father, but if I were to win, I would give my mother and stepfather in Louisiana one of the new computers because theirs crashed and my stepdad was recently laid off from his job. I would give another one of the computers to my dad and stepmom here in Georgia because the computer they have now was bought at a refurbishment place for $150. I would give another computer, the printer, and the media connect to my fellow interns at the theater that I work at because we’re all just starting out in our careers and it’d be nice to share that with someone to help them along. I’d give Kung Fu Panda to my little brother and his friend. The only thing I would keep would be one of the the laptops, and the interns and i would share the photo pack so we could print out some headshots.

Both my mother and stepmother are nurses, so they are definitely heroes to me. Thanks so much for the opportunity. :-)

Matt Standley

This contest has come not a moment too soon in my life! I am a single parent of two children. My sister recently died and left behind four children of her own with no one to care for them. I stepped in, and now have all six children in my home. It has been very difficult, because my son has learning disabilities and requires home schooling. I do not have my own computer, and so we make daily trips to the local library, but the time limits on the computers there are short at best.

I am also a passionate animal rescuer and have fostered and adopted out many animals in the last ten years.

I am aware that the local animal control desperately needs updated computer equipment to better place the animals that so desperately need a home. Additionally, I tutor underprivileged children in Language Arts for the local school district. These computers could make a huge difference for them as well.

If I win this contest, I will do the following: Give one computer to the local animal control, give one computer to the local school for the students, and keep one for myself so that my son can use it for his home schooling needs. It would also be beneficial for my sister’s children to have a means of using the new computers as well.

Please consider my family in this contest. Thank you.
