Basic Computer Tips - From David Pogue and TechMama

David Pogue published is list of basic computer tips in the circuits section of the New York Times today. Some of those tips I have talked about in the past, including phishing schemes.

I will get my own list together, but for now here a few of my tips:
1. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:Make sure to apply updates to operating system and online applications to keep up to date on all the fixes. Many people don't understand that in this dynamic environment most companies fix fix bugs by applying updates. When you get a new computer, the first thing you do after getting it up and running should be to install virus protection (unless it has it), figure out a back-up procedure and then apply the operating system updates. 2. Always write down you wireless router encryption key in a safe place - other then as a sticky not on your computer screen or in a file on your computer that you won't be able to get to - IF YOUR WIRELESS IS DOWN!

3. Try to fully shut down your computer regularly to give it a rest... Sleep and hibernate are fine for temporary periods of time only...

4. Beware of malicious software, even if you have virus protection. Know the signs...

5. Don't give away ANY personal information online - especially in response to emails from your bank (NOTE: BANKS DON'T ASK FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER EMAIL). Here are two posts I did on phishing scams, one for Domains and the other for general phishing..

6. Here are some tips for documents and personal security (that we discussed at a Staples seminar): Shred all personal documents, back-up computer reguarly, implement virus protection and make sure it is checking online and desktop applications and don't walk away from computers in public places (without them being secured)!

7. Try to rid your computer of crapware to help performance.

8. Protect yourself and your teens on social networking applications by configuring the privacy settings (right after creating your ID) and give your kids a lecture about "Their is NO privacy on the web"... Drunk or bikini pictures will make it in front of your future employer's eyes whether you like it or not...
